Mussi’s Massive Accident

Ginetta, Rally School No Comments »

While comfortably in second place in the British GT G40 Championship, Colchester’s Fulvio Mussi’s racing season was put in jeopardy, following the massive accident that saw the Ginetta destroyed and fellow racing driver Bradley Ellis end up in hospital.

Ginetta Car Accident

The official timed difference between first and second place on the line was a mere 0.009 seconds, in round nine of the British GT Championship at Thruxton.  Colchester’s Fulvio Mussi was hoping to close the gap on the Championship leaders this weekend., following his recent record of consistent podium finishes. Both Mussi and his co driver for the weekend, reigning GT Champion Bradley Ellis, struggled with the car, an intermittent engine cut out causing them to lose power on the straight; which meant they had to start both races third on the grid.

Mussi started the first race and managed to hold third place and then put pressure on the second placed car, a great pit stop and driver change saw Ellis gain a position.  The race leaders were given a drive through penalty after an incident and the lead was then taken by Ellis, unfortunately, he was unable to put any time between himself and the second placed car, who just tipped over the line at the chequered flag 9000th of a second in front of the RPM car, depriving Mussi of his first win of the season.

During round ten, when the car was in the lead a tap from behind sent Ellis into a Marshall’s post at 140 mph with a devastating effect. The race was stopped and the crowd held it’s breath while Ellis was removed from the car and rushed to hospital with a suspected neck injury. Mussi said “Obviously I am upset about the car but my main concern was for Bradley and his family.  I am glad to report that he was discharged from hospital the very next day.”

Connor Mills an Emerging Racing Talent

Go Karting No Comments »

Vortex sponsored Go Kart

Vortex recognises the prolific talent of Connor Mills in Karting. It is hard not to make parallels between Lewis Hamilton and Connor Mills. Lewis started in Karting and progressed from Karting to F1. And Connor is currently going through the motions of bewildering everyone with his performances in Karts.

Connor recently won the Ace of Clubs Championship at Whilton Mill representing Buckmore Park. The Ace of Clubs is where Karting Tracks send their best two drivers. He could not have been more impressive. As Connor was absent for the initial qualifying event on the Saturday, because he was racing at Lydd in the South East Championship, he had to start in last place (24th) on the grid in the Ace of Clubs. He battled his way through the field and in the final was second on the grid, from where the only conclusion was going to be a win.

Connor is currently leading the formula 6 championship and holds the ‘O’ plate title. He holds track records at Larkhill and Lydd and is leading the Rye House and Lydd Championships this year. Connor is currently lying second in the Super One British Championships and there are two rounds still to go. Vortex is proud to sponsor this exciting young talent and help him advance his career in racing.

Watch out Lewis Hamilton!

Vortex advances at Chatsworth Park BRC 50th Anniversary

Chatsworth, Rally School No Comments »

Press Release

The 50th Anniversary of the BRC held in the grounds of Chatsworth House brought together rally professionals from the past and the present, described by Octane Magazine as “a panoply of post war rallying”, by Derbyshire Telegraph as “a rally fest” and by The Daily Telegraph as “a spectacular array of classic and modern rally cars” and “reminiscent of the early years of the Goodwood festival of speed”

We describe it simply as it was: “The History of British Rallying.” On view and rallying were cars from the sixties onwards. This was a spectacle that any admirer of rallying would have enjoyed.

The BRC made efforts to involve rally stars from the past as well as the current leaders in BRC classes. Even world rally leaders were present and participated in the short event. BRC contenders were also there in to contest four rallies over Chatsworth Park stages. The vortex sponsored diesel car fitted with the Vortex Raceflo resonator exhaust system was among them. Pictured below collecting their award for 1st in the diesel category is Fin McCaul, driver, with Matthew House, Vortex Sales Manager.

Apart from the class win another 1st to come from the meeting was the acceptance of the Vortex resonator in place of a diesel particulate filter (DPF). FIA & MSA Technical Delegate Rab McDonald who was involved in testing the emissions of the vortex sponsored vehicle before the meeting deliberated over its acceptance as a replacement of the filter during the meeting. On Sunday 8th June the vortex resonator, which reduces diesel particulates radically, was accepted as an emissions controlling instrument. So henceforth in the BRC diesel entrants will be able to have either a DPF type filter or a Vortex resonator fitted to their rally cars to reduce particulates. The advantage the Vortex has over a filtration type system is the increase in gas flow it allows and the benefits that come from that in power and torque. There is also big benefit to the environment from the reduction in diesel consumption and major drop in diesel particulate emissions. Driver Fin McCaul stated “this is a big step in the right direction. I am now looking forward to having the car tuned to the new exhaust system.”

Tuning Track And Rally Cars

Specialist Tuning No Comments »

Until the development of vortex, engine tuners have been hard pressed to maximise engine power.  This technology is a unique new development, previously unavailable. Back pressure has been a problem since the development of the internal combustion engine, stifling engine tuning and robbing up to 25% of an engine’s efficiency.  There are many self-proclaimed experts in engine tuning.  Most of them only know part of the knowledge needed to get the best performance from an engine.  Many of them believe in increasing fuel delivery and advancing timing to gain more power.  But tuning has three important elements to it and understanding how these combine is the key to optimising tuning an engine.  These are:

·      Negation of exhaust backpressure and exhaust gas leak back.

·      Timing

·      Fuel Delivery

At Vortex Exhaust Technology we use the virtuous circle shown below to bring an engines performance to its optimum.

Tuning diagram

  Source: Vortex R&D

Backpressure is the element that takes performance away from an engine, and the lower you reduce it the better performance you will get.  Vortex exhaust systems eliminate the affect of backpressure and allow tuners the ability to remap/tune engines without the inefficiencies caused by backpressure acting against the crankshaft and leak back of exhaust gas which interferes with combustion.

Vortex tuning department is able to deliver the maximum power and torque your engine can produce. We provide specialised tuning services for the following applications:

·      Race cars

·      Rally cars

·      Track cars

·      High performance cars

Vortex Winning Formula

Rally School No Comments »

In a BMW120 diesel Fin McCaul finished first in the diesel and R3 class of the Pirelli International Rally held 19 April, 2008, which is the first round of the British Rally Championship.  In terms of achievement this merits high enough to be called very exceptional. The next rally will be the Jim Clark Rally. The Vortex team is confident that their exhaust technology will make the difference and that Fin has an excellent chance to carry on winning and lift the silverware.   Barry Mead of Vortex stated “we have a unique product. The vortex resonator is the best exhaust product in the world and no other exhaust system comes near it for performance. Uniquely Vortex exhausts take away the inefficiencies that normally prevent an engine from giving the optimum performance. No other exhaust can do this.  Basically it gives you significantly more torque and power when you need it where you need it.”

Vortex-0355

Fin praised the new vortex exhaust system. When interviewed by BRC’s Simon Moss he stated “the vortex made such a difference to the car and it’s much more drivable now.” After the rally Fin said the immense difference the vortex made was in the corners which allowed him to stay in higher gears and power away in that gear rather than changing down, and there was now no turbo lag.

Leading BRC diesel rally car now has a vortex exhaust

Uncategorized No Comments »

Fin McCaul, who finished first in last year’s BRC Diesel Class Championship now has a vortex fitted to the exhaust of his rally car and will be taking diesel rally cars to a higher level in performance.

Torque Exhausts in Enfield did the vortex fitting work and Red Dot Racing in Watford tuned the engine.  It was a long day for everyone but it was worth it.  The vortex gave a big gain in torque in the area where it is most useful.
